It's been a while since I read the manga. It's hard to remember all the details and differences. One thing that always annoyed me about the begginning was explaining Ed and Al's past in the second episode and then have the Father Cornello stuff after. The whole point of the latter was to build narrative intrigue and then have the reveal of their past have more weight. Take that away and episode in Leore has no real narrative purpose anymore. It's just boils it down to what it ultimately is:

Ed and Al reach a dead end.

I do kind of remember the pacing of the episodes in FMAB feeling slow. Plus 2003 had some great episodes that stand on their own. Like Mother, the episode where Winry learns about Mustang, Ed and Al being stranded on the island for their training, the Lujon episode among others.

Whenever I think of Brotherhood episodes they all just sort of blur into one.

It does at least start better than Brotherhood does which I will give. Yup, I agree there very much with everything you said regarding 2003. Brotherhood and by extension the manga never had any scenes like when 48 tells Ed's idealism won't help him in the long run and he turns out to be right later on Ed was tempted to transmute the Lab 5 inmates. Other stuff like Armstrong pointing out that is Ed going to rip off Wrath's arm and leg and sew on to himself. The Greed death also being a great poigant moment. There's also Dante pointing out the flaws of equvilant exchange. Ed in Brotherhood by comparison never has any of this nor has any major loses or events that shake him. Ed gets mortally wounded Kimbley but his whole using life energy to heal himself never goes anywhere. It might as well just be a deus ex machina for what little narrative weight it had.

Plus the foreshadowing annoys me too where Greed points that Ed might sccumb to the concept but it doesn't really happen. Kimbley telling Alphonse that he has to choose between saving people and getting his goals which neither goes anywhere.

I also agree on the homculii too. Plus the only good villains in the homculli group in Brotherhood was Lust and Bradley. The former while not being as good as 2003 was a solid villain in that she did get things done and challenged the heroes. It always annoyed me how in Brotherhood, the homculli were just punching bags who happened to be immortal and have elgonated health bars. Bradley was always the most popular but that's only because he was the only who was geniunely threatning. It's even funnier when the only two major deaths Fuu and Bucaneer were by him. It's like being the best player on a terrible sports team. There's even brawls that happen in the public with collateral damage and no civilian even questions them.

Compare that to 2003 where they acted much more descretly. They often attacked Ed and Al in places barely anyone was looking, at night or tight spaces. A lot of the fights were really any major populated places. They were smart rather than relying on their powers and immortality. You would never have a scene where Glutonny kills Yoki while hiding in a crowd in Brotherhood and the manga.

Yeah me too. It's the novelty of the Jinchuu arc never getting an offical animated adaptation that makes the idea interesting.

I'm hoping it's at least isn't terrible. I don't remember the manga that well but it seems to be using it's "true to the text" adaptation as it's primary selling point. Many of the adaptations did homage it some way. I need more to be enticed.

I have a lot of issues with Brotherhood and the manga by extension but I found the first 13 episodes to be remarkable in how bad they are. To the point where I'm convinced it started off as a "you watched FMA 2003 so let's just rush through the early parts" but then it got repurposed into trying to stand on it's own but it was already too late. It always did bug me how it's diehard fans just tolerate how poor they are. The first episode alone is enough to make me go like, "WHAT WAS THAT!?"

I also agree, I watched FMA 2003 probably around 3-4 times despite the franchise as a whole kind of bugging me now but Brotherhood I can't picture myself watching a 3rd time. The manga would more or less be a quicker way of getting through it and at least stuff like the opening in Leore was decently handled in that.

It'll probably keep the comedy but yeah Trust and Betrayal being topped is almost going to be impossible. The flashback arc was the best part of that whole thing too. Still, it'll more or less serve the same purpose that the last 10 minutes of the 3rd Golden Age Arc Berserk movie did. An unofficial ending to the adaptations that were cut short lol.

They also kept the Rugita stuff larely the same even though it was widly criticised. No one really would have minded them adding changes to it. Thanks to this, I'll just rewatch the 90s version and wait until the Jinchuu arc gets adapted. The part the 90s series couldn't touch.

I already watched some of the stuff listed. I might've bookmarked you stack before knowing what the feature was. I mainly liked the final arc of Crystal but that's because I didn't like it in the anime so my expectations were super low. That and they were shorter by comparison.

The funny thing is that it's sort of happening with the recent Ghost in the Shell anime. Everyone thinks of the 90s movie and finds the more manga faithful recent adaptation to be head scratching.

The irony is that Brotherhood isn't a shot for shot recreation of the manga either. Yes, of course the early sections were rushed(the critcized parts) but that's how it was in the manga. The stuff with Nina and Tucker was faithful. Hughes' screen time wasn't even diminished, they removed the train robbery but the 2003 version gave him a lot of adaptation expansion. I have a hard time ever buying anyone would like him if it was just the manga since he dies very quickly in it.

There's also that terrible first episode which is indeed filler both in terms of not being in the manga and it's relevance to the story. There was also that recap episode with Hoeinheim which was interesting on paper but starts losing it's luster when you realize he never met any of the characters in the flashbacks yet or was even there during them.

I agree overall. It's funny how copying off someone else in school is highly discouraged and it took me awhile to understand why it was so.

I read your Sailor Moon Eternal review and have your underrated anime list on my interest stacks. I don't think the movie is that bad but I wholeheartledly goddamn agree on stupid demanding "Brotherhood" adaptations are. For one, it's a monkey's paw and second, it's revisionist history because FMAB exists because of how popular and well loved the 2003 version was for it's time. It's easy to tell due to Bones doing both adaptations and how small the time gap was for FMAB to get made after. It's also a vary narrow minded way of viewing adaptations as you point out.

Sailor Moon Crystal usually tends to be my go to example even if I think the series is just average. The recent Rurouni Kenshin reboot is my second.
